Michael Rivera is an Illustrator out of Boston Massachusetts. Michael started illustrating in the 80s as a graffiti artist in Bronx New York. His illustrations were influenced by children. He would get hired to paint murals on grocery store fronts. Kids would stand around and watch him work for hours. The illustrations were always kid-oriented, always funny and cartoonish. He was well-known in the community for his funny illustrations. He was asked to work in a community summer camp as a counselor where he entertained the children by creating coloring books and illustrating stories for them. In 1992 he joined the U.S. Army and travelled to different countries. On his free time, he continued working in summer camps and volunteering with special needs children programs. While in the army he found it easy to communicate with children from other countries using his illustration even though he did not speak their language. This experience led him to pursue a career in children illustrations. By creating simple illustrations for children using color mediums they are familiar with (such as markers, color pencils and watercolors), he plans to continue communicating with children around the world.
